Chapter 13
A Sacrifice Foretold
The prophecies speak of a great offering, a choice that will determine the fate of the plains. Sky Eyes understands the weight of her destiny.
The air hung heavy, not with the scent of rain, but with an unspoken sorrow that clung to the prairie grass like morning dew. Sky Eyes traced the worn symbols on the hide stretched before her, Elder Willow’s ancient prophecies etched in the blood of generations. Each line, each curve, spoke of a time when the earth would weep, when the great herds would falter, and a choice, stark and terrible, would be laid before one who walked between worlds. The words, once mere whispers in the wind, now roared within her soul, a tempest of understanding and dread.

Sky Eyes’ gaze drifted to the distant forms of the bison, their dust-colored bodies indistinguishable against the vast canvas of the plains. The unease that had settled upon her like a shroud during their last migration, the subtle shift in their gait, the vacant stare in some of their ancient eyes – it was all here, written in the faded ink of the prophecies. A sickness that seeped not from the flesh, but from the very spirit of the earth. And the cure, it seemed, demanded a sacrifice that made her own breath catch in her throat.
