Chapter 11
Iron Hand's Offer
Iron Hand confronts Sky Eyes, offering a deal: abandon the wild, and her people will prosper. She refuses, her resolve hardening.
The dust devils danced on the horizon, ephemeral spirits of the plains, and Sky Eyes felt a familiar ache in her chest. It was the ache of knowing, of seeing the world through eyes that perceived more than just the visible. The bison, her kin, were restless. Their low, mournful bellows carried on the wind like laments for a lost time. The sickness, a creeping shadow, had touched more of their number, leaving them weak and listless. Elder Willow’s words, heavy with the weight of generations, echoed in her mind: *“When the earth weeps, the herd weeps with her.”*

Three men, their horses lathered, rode in with a confidence that felt alien on these sacred lands. At their head was a man whose name was spoken in hushed tones, a name that carried the scent of distant cities and the clatter of metal. Iron Hand.
He dismounted with a practiced ease, his gaze sweeping over the simple dwellings, the grazing herds, and then settling on Sky Eyes. His eyes, sharp and assessing, seemed to cut through the veil of her connection to the earth. He was a man who saw resources, not spirits; profit, not prayer.
