Elder Willow reveals a personal connection to the imbalance, a secret he carried, hoping Sky Eyes would be the one to mend it.
The air in Elder Willow’s lodge was thick with the scent of dried herbs and the quiet weight of unspoken histories. Outside, the plains stretched, a tapestry of greens and golds under a sky that had begun to weep a fine, insistent rain. Sky Eyes sat across from the Elder, her gaze steady, her heart a hummingbird trapped in her chest. The whispers, which had been a constant murmur in her mind, had coalesced into a single, urgent plea. Elder Willow’s eyes, ancient pools reflecting the flickering firelight, held a depth of sorrow that mirrored the land’s own grief.
“You carry a great burden, Elder,” Sky Eyes began, her voice a soft ripple in the stillness. “I feel it, like a stone worn smooth by the river, yet still heavy.”
Elder Willow nodded, his thin fingers tracing the worn carvings on his staff. “The weight of knowing, Sky Eyes. The weight of seeing what others choose not to see, or perhaps, what they are forbidden to see.” He paused, his gaze drifting towards the entrance, as if a phantom herd might pass by. “This sickness that gnaws at our bison, this unease that settles on the plains like a shroud… it is not new, child. It is an echo. An echo of a wound that has never truly healed.”
