The acrid smell of smoke still clung to Anya’s clothes, a phantom limb of the night’s terror. The library, once her sanctuary, now stood as a skeletal ruin against the bruised dawn sky. Charcoal gnawed at the edges of what had been her world, the hushed aisles, the comforting weight of books, the scent of aged paper.
