The acrid smell of smoke still clung to Anya’s clothes, a phantom limb of the night’s terror. The library, once her sanctuary, now stood as a skeletal ruin against the bruised dawn sky. Charcoal gnawed at the edges of what had been her world, the hushed aisles, the comforting weight of books, the scent of aged paper. It was all gone, reduced to a smoldering testament to Oakhaven’s festering secrets.

She stood across the street, a solitary figure against the hushed murmurs of the gathered townsfolk. Their faces, etched with a mixture of shock and something else – a grim resignation, perhaps – were turned towards the blackened shell. Sheriff Brody, his uniform smudged with soot, directed the remaining embers, his face a mask of professional weariness. Anya watched him, her gaze drifting to the imposing silhouette of the Thorne estate, its windows dark and unyielding, a silent sentinel overlooking the town’s misfortune. Elias Thorne himself was nowhere to be seen, a man who seemed to possess an uncanny ability to remain unseen when the flames of truth threatened to lick too close.

The fire had been a brutal, indiscriminate thief. It had stolen not only the building but also the painstakingly gathered fragments of Eleanor Vance’s story. The journal, her only tangible link to the past, was surely reduced to ash. The hidden compartment, the one where Anya had found the final, chilling entry, would have been consumed. A wave of despair washed over her, cold and heavy. Had it all been for nothing? Had Eleanor’s desperate attempt to illuminate the darkness been extinguished along with the library’s timbers?
