Chapter 6
The Thorne's Gambit
Elias Thorne, descendant of a family implicated, approaches Anya. His charm masks a chilling possessiveness over the town's history. He subtly attempts to steer Anya away from the truth.
The scent of old paper and lemon polish was usually Anya’s solace, a comforting embrace in the quiet halls of the Havenwood Library. But today, it felt cloying, thick with unspoken anxieties. The journal, Eleanor Vance's desperate confession, lay hidden beneath a loose floorboard in her small apartment, a constant, silent accusation. Anya found herself looking at the hushed patrons, the weathered spines of books, and the very air of Havenwood with a new, uneasy suspicion. Every polite nod, every whispered conversation, seemed to carry a hidden weight, a secret held just out of sight.
It was during one such afternoon, as Anya was reshelving a cart of returned novels, that he appeared. He moved with an effortless grace that commanded attention, his presence filling the aisle like a sudden, potent perfume. Elias Thorne. His name had been a recurring whisper in the journal, a shadow cast by a prominent family. He was precisely as the town’s hushed reverence had painted him: tall, impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit that spoke of old money, with a smile that was both disarming and unnervingly controlled. His eyes, the color of a stormy sea, met hers, and Anya felt a peculiar sensation, a flicker of recognition she couldn't place, like a half-forgotten dream.
“Miss Anya, isn’t it?” His voice was a low baritone, smooth as polished mahogany. He extended a hand, and Anya, momentarily flustered, took it. His grip was firm, his palm warm. “Elias Thorne. I’ve been meaning to introduce myself. Welcome to Havenwood. We’re all rather pleased to have you gracing our library.”
