Anya traced the faded ink on the brittle page, a shiver crawling up her spine that had nothing to do with the library’s perpetual chill. Eleanor Vance’s words, sharp and urgent, seemed to bleed through time, each sentence a desperate plea from a forgotten ghost. “They will not let me speak,” Eleanor had written, the ink smudged as if by a trembling hand. “The veil of respectability is woven with threads of fear and silence. But I have found the proof. It is hidden where the light does not reach, guarded by those who profit from the darkness.”

Light. Darkness. Anya’s own mind felt like a perpetual twilight, fractured images flickering at the edges of her consciousness. A child’s laughter, sharp and sudden, followed by a suffocating darkness. A woman’s cry, choked off before it could fully form. These fragments had plagued her for years, the reason she’d sought refuge in this sleepy town, a place where the loudest sound was the rustling of leaves and the ticking of the grandfather clock in the town square. She’d thought anonymity, a quiet routine, would be enough to mend what was broken within her. But Eleanor’s journal, so meticulously hidden, so desperately found, was unraveling her carefully constructed peace.

The journal spoke of hushed meetings, of veiled threats, of a growing unease that settled over the town like a persistent fog. Eleanor had been a journalist, a local one, with an insatiable curiosity and a fierce belief in the truth. She’d been investigating the disappearance of a young woman, a case that had gone cold decades ago, dismissed as a runaway, a tragic accident. But Eleanor hadn't believed it. She’d dug, and dug, and then, as abruptly as her investigation began, she too had vanished. Anya felt a kinship with the dead woman, a shared desperation to pierce the veil of secrets.
