Anya and Kaelen infiltrate a restricted archive, finding evidence of Elara's experiments and a planned escape route.
The air in the archive tasted of dust and forgotten time. Anya moved with a hunter’s grace, her senses honed to a razor’s edge. Beside her, Kaelen’s usual cynicism had been replaced by a jittery tension, their eyes darting between the towering shelves of data cores and the silent, watchful cameras. This was it – the heart of the Council’s forbidden knowledge, a place whispered about in hushed tones in the undercity, a place Elara Vance had clearly sought.
“Stay close,” Anya murmured, her voice barely disturbing the oppressive silence. Her fingers traced the cool, metallic surface of a data core. Each one was a universe of information, locked away from the populace, controlled by the very entity Elara had dared to challenge.
Kaelen nodded, their gaze fixed on a flickering console embedded in a wall. “The primary access points are monitored, of course. But there are… older conduits. Less secure. Elara would have known.” They gestured towards a grimy ventilation shaft near the floor. “She was brilliant. And desperate.”
