The recycled air of Elara Vance’s hidden archive tasted like dust and desperation. Anya traced the intricate lines of a diagram etched onto a brittle, yellowed page. It depicted a celestial configuration, a swirl of stars and nebulae so familiar, so impossibly out of place in this grim, steel-plated world. Her breath hitched. It was the same constellation that had marked the gravestone of her younger brother, Liam, lost to a fever dream twenty years ago. The unsolved case that had gnawed at her, the one that had felt like a personal failure, now pulsed with a terrifying new relevance.
“You recognize it?” Kaelen’s voice, a low murmur from the shadows, startled her. They had been a ghost in the periphery since Anya had finally gained access to this trove of forbidden knowledge, their presence a silent promise of continued assistance, or perhaps a watchful eye.
Anya shook her head, her gaze still locked on the parchment. “It’s… it’s from my world. From home.” The words felt heavy, alien on her tongue. How could a symbol from Earth, from *her* Earth, be here, intertwined with the secrets of a murdered woman in a reality she’d only stumbled into?
