The air in the Undercity was a thick, cloying blanket. Anya inhaled, tasting the metallic tang of decay and the faint, sweet perfume of something flowering unseen in the perpetual twilight. Above, the sleek, silver spires of the Council’s domain pierced the smog-choked sky, a monument to control and order. Down here, however, order had long since frayed, leaving behind a tapestry of rust, grime, and the hunched silhouettes of those who lived in the shadows. Her boots, designed for the polished chrome of her own time, crunched on loose debris, each step an alien sound in this forgotten stratum.

She’d been warned, of course. Even the hushed whispers in the sterile, grey corridors of the city’s public archives hinted at the dangers lurking below. “The Unseen,” they called it, a place where the Council’s omnipresent gaze faltered, where dissent festered, and where information, the most valuable commodity in this stagnant reality, could be bought, sold, or stolen. Anya, clutching the worn datapad containing Elara Vance’s fragmented journal, felt a prickle of unease that had nothing to do with the failing light. This was where the answers lay, a truth buried deeper than any tomb.

Anya navigated the labyrinthine passages, guided by the crude, hand-drawn map Kaelen had sketched on a scrap of synth-paper. The map was a testament to desperation, a spiderweb of alleys and disused service tunnels. The architecture here was a stark contrast to the minimalist elegance above; it was utilitarian, brutal, built for function rather than form, and now, long abandoned, it sagged under the weight of time and neglect. Pipes, thick as a man’s arm, snaked across ceilings, weeping oily tears onto the cracked pavement. The only illumination came from sporadic, flickering glow-strips, casting long, dancing shadows that played tricks on the eyes.
