Kaelen was a shadow at her back, a coiled spring of nervous energy, but Anya felt a strange calm settle over her. The guilt, the gnawing uncertainty that had been her constant companion since she’d stepped through the anomaly, had receded, replaced by a cold, sharp clarity.

“You know,” Anya stated, her voice steady, cutting through the oppressive stillness. It wasn’t a question. It was an accusation, weighted with the knowledge she had painstakingly pieced together from Elara Vance’s scattered data fragments, from Kaelen’s hushed whispers, and from the chilling echoes of her own past.

Valerius inclined his head, a slow, deliberate movement that managed to convey both condescension and a flicker of something Anya couldn’t quite decipher – anticipation? “I know you believe you do, Detective Sharma. This world is a complex tapestry, and one often pulls at threads that lead to unexpected places.” His voice, smooth as river stone, was a stark contrast to the venom Anya felt coiling in her gut.
