The air in the chamber hung thick and still, a suffocating blanket woven from fear and the metallic tang of desperation. Anya stood firm, her gaze locked on Valerius, the charismatic façade he’d so carefully constructed now crumbling like ancient stone. Kaelen, a silent sentinel at her side, offered no comfort, only a grim readiness that mirrored Anya’s own. The grand hall, once a testament to the Council’s supposed wisdom and order, now felt like a tomb, its polished obsidian walls reflecting only their stark confrontation.
“You can’t escape this, Valerius,” Anya’s voice was a low rumble, cutting through the oppressive silence. “Not this time.”
Valerius’s eyes, usually alight with a practiced charm, darted between Anya and the impassive guards flanking the entrance. His hands, which had so often gestured with benevolent authority, now clenched and unclenched at his sides. “Escape? Detective Sharma, you misunderstand. This is not an escape, but a… recalibration.”
