Anya traced the condensation on the viewport, the cityscape a smear of dull chrome and perpetual twilight. Twenty years. Twenty years since the Reyes case had gone cold, a knot of unanswered questions tightening in her gut, a constant, gnawing reminder of her own perceived failures. Now, here, in this world that felt like a decaying echo of her own, the ghost of that unsolved murder had materialized into something far more tangible, far more terrifying.

She was in Kaelen’s cramped dwelling, the air thick with the metallic tang of recycled air and the faint, sweetish scent of some unfamiliar herb. Kaelen, their face a mask of weary cynicism, watched her with an unnerving stillness. Anya had spent the last cycle poring over the scant records of Elara Vance, piecing together fragments of a life brutally extinguished. The similarities were too stark, too precise to be mere coincidence.

“He was a father,” Anya murmured, her voice raspy, barely a whisper. “Married. Two kids. They never found him. Just… vanished. Like he’d been scrubbed from existence.” She looked up, her eyes meeting Kaelen’s. “The Reyes case. This is how it started for me. A disappearance. No witnesses, no evidence, just… gone.”
