Anya faces a difficult choice as Kaelen's loyalty is tested by the council's threats and promises.
The sterile air of the interrogation room tasted like recycled despair. Anya traced the condensation on the table with a fingertip, the cool dampness a stark contrast to the burning questions in her mind. Kaelen sat opposite her, their usual cynical guard lowered, replaced by a raw, exposed vulnerability that Anya recognized from her own mirrored reflections. The council’s ‘offer’ had been delivered with the chilling politeness that only those who wield absolute power could muster. Freedom for Kaelen, a comfortable existence within the city’s gilded cage, in exchange for Anya’s complete cooperation. Or, the alternative, whispered with a veiled threat, was a swift, silent erasure.
“They want me to tell them everything,” Kaelen’s voice was barely a whisper, each word heavy with the weight of their impending decision. “About how we found the archive, about what we learned. About you.”
Anya’s gaze met Kaelen’s, searching for the flicker of defiance, the spark of the rebel she’d come to know. But all she saw was fear, a primal terror that threatened to consume them. “And what did you tell them?” Anya asked, her own voice carefully neutral, though her stomach churned with dread.
