She stood by the window, the moonlight painting silver streaks across the worn floorboards, her gaze fixed on the shadowed treeline. A knot of unease had tightened in her stomach hours ago, a premonition as sharp and cold as a winter wind. Liam was late. He’d promised to return by sunset, his voice a silken promise against her ear, but the moon had climbed high, its pale face mocking her vigil.
