The air still tasted of gunpowder and Jack’s final, ragged breath. Joe moved through the wreckage of their sanctuary like a phantom, each step a heavy, leaden weight. The splintered wood, the torn fabric of their shared life, all bore witness to the brutality that had stolen his world. He’d fought, of course. He’d always fought, honed by Jack’s unwavering tutelage, but this… this was different. This was the abyss opening beneath his feet. The QRO. They had finally broken through.

Jack’s sacrifice, a blinding flash of movement and a desperate shove, replayed endlessly behind Joe’s eyes. He’d seen the glint of metal, the cold efficiency of their attackers, and then Jack, his strong hands pushing Joe towards the hidden escape route, his voice a strained whisper, “Go, Joe. Live.” And then the silence. A silence that screamed louder than any explosion.

He found it beneath the loose floorboard in Jack’s study, the one Jack had always warned him never to disturb. A small, intricately carved wooden box, cool to the touch. His fingers trembled as he lifted the lid. Inside, nestled on faded velvet, was a single, tarnished silver locket. It wasn’t what he’d expected, no coded message, no weapon. Just a locket. He clicked it open. Two miniature portraits stared back: a younger Jack, his eyes alight with a warmth Joe rarely saw, and a woman, her face kind and her smile gentle. Beneath them, etched in tiny script, was a single word: “Elara.”
