The biting wind whipped Joe’s hair across his face, each gust a cold reminder of his solitude. Jack was gone. The words still felt alien, a foreign language he couldn’t quite translate into reality. He ran, not with the desperate, blind panic of his initial flight, but with a grim, focused energy, fueled by a potent cocktail of grief and nascent rage. The alleyways of the city, once a tapestry of familiar shadows he navigated with Jack’s quiet guidance, now felt like a labyrinth designed to trap him. Every flickering neon sign, every distant siren, sent a jolt of adrenaline through him. The QRO. The Seven Brothers of Death. He needed to think, to process the whirlwind of events that had culminated in Jack’s brutal sacrifice. The QRO operatives, their faces masked by professionalism and cold efficiency, had been relentless. Jack had fought like a cornered lion, his movements a blur of controlled fury, buying Joe precious seconds. But even Jack, with all his formidable skill, had his limits. The memory of Jack’s final, ragged breath, the look of fierce love and resignation in his eyes, clawed at Joe’s throat.
