Chapter 18 — The Key of Letting Go
Elara and Kael descend into the fracture's heart and meet Seren, the seal's guardian. She reveals the shard can only be mended by surrendering a deep hope. Elara offers certainty instead, using a key from the cracked sphere. The shard heals, the fracture seals, and a door of light appears—buying them until the new moon to find their way home.
The tunnel narrowed, its walls pressing close on either side. The sphere cast just enough light to see a few steps ahead, but the darkness beyond felt solid, like something you could reach out and touch. The rumbling grew louder, more insistent, vibrating through the earth beneath their feet.
Elara's breath came quick. The air was thick, damp, heavy with the smell of wet stone and something metallic. Beside her, Kael moved with a quiet grace she envied—his footsteps barely audible, his shoulders loose despite the tension that had to be coiling inside him.
“It sounds like it's right ahead,” she whispered.
