The Door of the In-Between
Elara and Kael follow the sphere's path to a chamber with three doorways—each leading to a separate realm. Two guardian figures tell them they must choose by sunset: one returns to their own world alone, the other to a life bound between realms, forever apart from their pasts. Choosing each other, they enter the green door and arrive in the heart of the Veilwood, where a being claiming to be the Veilwood itself confronts them, reviving the sphere with a threat: one final choice awaits, costing everything they haven't already sacrificed.
The path of light stretched through the Veilwood like a vein of gold in dark stone. Elara held the sphere close, her fingers cold against its smooth surface. The hum was steady, almost alive, as if it were breathing with them.
Kael walked beside her, his steps silent on the mossy ground. The dawn light filtered through the twisted branches, painting everything in shades of amber and rose. Birds called somewhere ahead, their songs unfamiliar—too melodic, too precise to be from any world she knew.
“How far do you think it goes?” Kael asked.
