Mia’s sanctuary was the hushed, comforting scent of aging paper and ink. Her bedroom, more a shrine to literature than a living space, was a testament to her devotion. Towers of books, meticulously categorized and alphabetized, climbed the walls like ivy. Here, amidst the quiet hum of her own intellectual universe, she felt most herself. Max, bless his leather-clad, perpetually rumpled existence, was a welcome disruption, a vibrant splash of color against the muted tones of her inner world. Tonight, however, even his usual boisterous presence couldn't quite shake the persistent tremor of unease that had settled in her gut.

He was sprawled on her bed, a textbook open but unread on his chest, his eyes tracking the rhythmic sway of her pendulum clock rather than the dense prose. “You’re quiet tonight, Mia,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the mattress. “Everything okay?”

Mia, perched on her desk chair, was ostensibly reviewing notes for a history test, but her gaze kept drifting to the open window, the sliver of moon casting an ethereal glow on the manicured lawn. “Just… thinking.”
