The alley air hung thick with the cloying scent of exhaust fumes and something else, something floral and sickly sweet that Rosie couldn’t quite place. It was the kind of smell that clung to expensive perfume, the kind she’d only ever encountered in magazines. She clutched the strap of her backpack, her knuckles white, the streetlights casting long, distorted shadows that danced like specters. This was farther than she usually ventured after school, a detour born of a sudden, inexplicable urge to avoid the usual path, the one that led past the bustling cafe where Max and Mia often met.
A low rumble, like a predator clearing its throat, cut through the city’s hum. Rosie froze, her heart leaping into her throat. It was the sound of a car, a powerful engine idling, impossibly close. She risked a glance around the corner of the graffiti-scarred brick building.
There, parked with an almost arrogant disregard for the cramped space, was a car unlike any she had ever seen. It was sleek, black as midnight, and impossibly long, its chrome accents glinting under the weak streetlights. But it wasn't the car that held her captive; it was the man leaning against it, his silhouette sharp against the dim light.
