Chapter 18
Unveiling Secrets
Rosie uncovers a shocking secret about her own family, revealing a hidden connection that explains Asher's obsession and the danger she's in.
The attic air hung thick with the scent of aged paper and forgotten things. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of light that pierced the gloom, illuminating Rosie’s determined face. She’d been drawn here, to this forbidden space, by a gnawing unease, a feeling that the answers to the unsettling questions swirling around her lay hidden amongst the relics of her family’s past. Her fingers, trembling slightly, traced the faded inscription on an old wooden chest. It was Emily’s handwriting, her mother’s elegant script, a stark contrast to the rough, unfamiliar symbols scrawled beneath.
She pushed open the heavy lid. Inside, nestled amongst yellowed linens and moth-eaten blankets, was a small, leather-bound journal. It wasn’t her mother’s usual elegant diary, but something older, its pages brittle with age. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she opened it. The script within was a man’s, angular and urgent. She recognized the name scrawled on the inside cover: Victor. Her father.
The entries spoke of a life she’d never known, a life before her, before Max. He wrote of a woman, a woman named Isabella, and a love that consumed him. He described a passion so fierce, so all-encompassing, that it bled into recklessness. And then, the tone shifted, darkening with a fear she’d only ever glimpsed in Noah’s eyes, but colder, more profound. He wrote of debts, of dangerous men, of a desperation to protect Isabella. He mentioned a name, a name that sent a shiver down her spine: Asher.
