Asher's past trauma begins to surface, revealing why he is so fixated on Rosie. A mysterious event directly links his history to her present.
The air in Asher’s penthouse was thick with the scent of expensive cigars and an unspoken tension. Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, mirroring the storm brewing within him. He sat in his oversized leather armchair, a tumbler of amber liquid swirling in his hand, the ice clinking a somber rhythm against the glass. Images flickered behind his eyes, ghosts of a past he’d long buried, now clawing their way to the surface. A young girl, no older than Rosie, her laughter like wind chimes, her eyes wide with an innocence that now felt like a cruel mockery. That innocence, he realized with a jolt, was what drew him to Rosie. It was a fragile bloom he desperately wanted to protect, or perhaps, possess.
His gaze drifted to a framed photograph on his mahogany desk. It was a candid shot, taken from a distance, of Rosie walking with her friends, her head tilted back in laughter. She was oblivious to the predatory gaze that had captured her, to the dangerous currents swirling around her. He traced the outline of her face with a calloused finger, a possessive ache tightening his chest. She was a beacon in his otherwise desolate world, a fragile promise of something he’d lost, or perhaps, never had.
A sharp rap on the door shattered the reverie. “Enter,” he growled, his voice rough.
