Lily adjusted the strap of her shoulder bag, a nervous flutter in her stomach that had nothing to do with the upcoming history test. She’d seen Asher’s car, a sleek, obsidian beast that seemed to swallow the sunlight, parked a few blocks from Rosie’s house again. It was the third time this week. He was always watching, a silent, imposing sentinel, and Lily, ever the keen observer of social dynamics, knew this was her moment. Recognition. Favor. Maybe even a little… gratitude.
She’d been practicing her casual approach in the mirror all morning. “Oh, Rosie, you know that intense guy who sometimes drives by? I think he’s really into you. It’s kinda sweet, in a dangerous way, you know?” She’d even added a little breathy sigh. It felt right. It felt like something that would make her seem perceptive, empathetic, and just a little bit worldly.
Today was the day. She spotted Rosie walking home from school, her usual small entourage trailing behind her. Mia, buried in a textbook even as she navigated the sidewalk, and Ava, her blonde ponytail bouncing with each energetic step. Lily sped up, her heart thrumming a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She wanted to get there before they reached Rosie’s front door, before the moment was lost.
