The fluorescent lights of the mall hummed with a manufactured cheerfulness that did little to soothe Ava’s frayed nerves. She’d been trying to shake off a gnawing unease since lunch, a feeling that something was fundamentally wrong, like a discordant note in an otherwise perfect melody. Rosie had been unusually quiet today, a shadow clinging to her usually bright eyes, and Max, in his usual overbearing fashion, had practically escorted her to school, his protective instincts on high alert. It was this quiet intensity, this simmering undercurrent of something unspoken, that had settled like a shroud over their group.
“Seriously, Ava, it’s just a bad day,” Jack said, his arm slung casually around her shoulders as they browsed a rack of graphic tees. He was oblivious, as usual, to the subtle shifts in the emotional landscape, his focus firmly on the tangible, the visible. Jack lived in a world of touchdowns and pep rallies, a world where problems were usually solved with a well-executed play or a stern word.
Ava leaned into him, grateful for the solid warmth of his presence, but her gaze kept drifting towards the entrance, a phantom fear prickling at the back of her neck. “I know, it’s just… Rosie seemed really off. And Noah was lurking around the parking lot again this morning.”
