The air in the dimly lit study hung heavy with the scent of aged leather and something else, something intoxicatingly dangerous that Rosie couldn’t quite place. Asher’s study. She’d been here before, fleetingly, a guest in his opulent, imposing world. But this time, it felt different. The heavy oak door had closed behind them with a definitive click, sealing her in with him, and the tremor that ran through her was not entirely born of fear.

He sat behind his vast mahogany desk, a silhouette against the glow of a single desk lamp. His eyes, those unnervingly perceptive eyes, were fixed on her, a silent, assessing gaze that made her skin prickle. She clutched the worn fabric of her cardigan, an inadequate defense against the intensity radiating from him.

“You’re quiet tonight, Rosie,” Asher’s voice, a low rumble, filled the silence. It was a voice that could soothe or shatter, and tonight, it did both.
