The city hummed with a low, persistent thrum, a symphony of sirens and distant traffic that usually faded into the background of Rosie’s life. Tonight, however, it felt amplified, each sound a discordant note in the growing unease that had settled in her chest like a cold stone. She traced the condensation on her bedroom window, the cool glass a stark contrast to the heat that seemed to emanate from the street below, a heat she instinctively knew was tied to him. Asher.

He was a phantom, a presence felt more than seen, a shadow that had begun to stretch and warp the edges of her carefully constructed world. Max, bless his overbearing heart, had tried to shield her, his usual bluster a little too strained when Asher’s name was even whispered. Mia, ever the pragmatist, had dismissed it as teenage drama, though her eyes held a flicker of worry when she looked at Rosie. Ava, lost in the bubble of her own burgeoning romance with Jack, had offered a cheerful, “Don’t worry, Ro, Max will sort it out.” But Max couldn’t sort this. No one could.

A glint of light caught her eye, a slow, deliberate sweep of headlights across her lawn. It wasn't the usual passing car. This was a lingering presence, a silent sentinel. Her breath hitched. He was out there, in the periphery of her vision, a constant, unnerving reminder of his attention. His game, whatever it was, was escalating.
