The fluorescent lights of the convenience store hummed a dull, incessant tune, a stark contrast to the frantic thrumming in Rosie’s chest. She clutched a carton of milk, her knuckles white, her gaze darting towards the automatic doors every few seconds. It had been a stupid idea to come alone, a desperate attempt to reclaim some semblance of normalcy, a single errand that didn't involve Max hovering like a hawk or Mia dissecting every anxious glance. But the normalcy was a mirage, as thin and fleeting as the scent of stale coffee that clung to the linoleum.
A shadow detached itself from the rack of potato chips, a familiar, unwelcome shape. Noah. He leaned against the aisle, a smirk playing on his lips, the same smirk that had once made her stomach flip with a nervous flutter, now curdling into a knot of icy dread. He was taller than she remembered, or perhaps it was just the way he seemed to fill the narrow aisle, blocking her escape.
“Fancy seeing you here, Rosie,” he drawled, his voice a silken threat. He pushed off the chips, taking a step closer. The air thickened, charged with an unspoken menace that made the other shoppers, oblivious in their mundane quests for snacks and sodas, seem like characters in a different, safer play.
