The air in the grand ballroom, once thick with the sweet perfume of deceit and ambition, now crackled with the cold, sterile scent of consequence. Eleanor Vance stood by the tall, arched windows, the morning sun glinting off the polished mahogany of the antique desk behind her. The hushed murmurs of the community, once a sinister chorus directed at her, had been replaced by the sharper, more official tones of law enforcement. It was over. She had anticipated this, planned for it, but the reality of it was still a heavy weight in her chest. The sheer audacity of their greed, the calculated cruelty, still sent a shiver down her spine.
