Chapter 8
Grief's Uncharted Territory
Maya is left alone, grappling with the shock and the immense void Liam's death has left. She must learn to navigate a world without her soulmate, facing her deepest fear of solitude.
The silence was the first thing Maya noticed. It wasn’t the comfortable quiet of a shared space, the hum of a refrigerator, or the distant drone of traffic. This silence was an absence, a gaping maw where Liam’s steady breathing should have been. It pressed in on her, heavy and suffocating, making the air thick and difficult to inhale. Her eyes fluttered open, the dawn light filtering through the blinds painting stripes across the unfamiliar ceiling of their condo. The condo. *Their* condo. The dream they’d built, brick by painstaking brick, from the rubble of their former lives. No rise and fall of his chest. Just the unnerving stillness of death. A strangled gasp escaped her lips, a sound so raw and primal it startled even her. She scrambled, her limbs clumsy and uncooperative, fumbling for his face, his hand, anything to confirm the horrifying truth her body already screamed. His skin was cold, a waxy pallor that stole the life from his features. The slight smile he often wore even in sleep was gone, replaced by a slack repose that looked alien and terrifying.
