The morning light, usually a gentle caress, felt like a harsh spotlight on Maya’s world. It crept through the blinds, painting stripes across the duvet, across Liam’s chest, across the space where his breath should have been. He was so still. Too still. A stillness that settled deep in her bones, a chilling premonition that had been gnawing at her for hours, even in the hazy depths of sleep. She’d woken in the pre-dawn gloom, a familiar ache of needing him, of wanting to trace the curve of his jaw, to feel the steady rhythm of his heart against her own. His skin was cool. Not the comforting warmth of sleep, but a profound, unnerving coolness. His lips, usually curved in a sleepy smile or a whispered endearment, were pale, parted slightly. Maya’s breath hitched. She fumbled for his wrist, her fingers trembling, searching for the pulse that had been the soundtrack to her life for so long. Nothing. Just the dull thud of her own frantic heartbeat in her ears.
