Chapter 6
A Fragile Paradise
Six years into their condo life, Liam's repeated jail stints create instability. Despite their hard-won peace, the shadow of addiction and past struggles lingers, a constant reminder of their journey.
The condo gleamed, a testament to their unlikely survival. Six years. Six years of scraping, of chasing, of falling and picking each other up, of navigating the labyrinthine paths of addiction and recovery, and sometimes, of falling right back into the familiar, suffocating embrace of it. Maya traced the cool granite countertop, a stark contrast to the chipped Formica of their first shared apartment, the one that always smelled faintly of stale cigarette smoke and desperation. This place, with its soft lighting and the distant hum of the city outside, felt like a mirage, a dream they’d somehow willed into existence.
Liam was asleep, sprawled on the plush sofa, the afternoon sun catching the silver streaks in his hair. He looked peaceful, a rare commodity in the turbulent landscape of their lives. Maya’s heart ached with a familiar, tender ache. He was still her Ricky, her rock, her partner in crime, her soulmate. But the peace was fragile, a delicate butterfly perched on a thorny branch. The last two months had been a blur of anxiety, a tightrope walk over the abyss of Liam’s recurring trips to jail. Three times. Three times she’d waited, her stomach a knot of dread, her phone a lifeline, until he was back, smelling of disinfectant and regret, but always, always with that spark in his eyes that told her he was home.
She remembered the first time, after the condo had been theirs for barely seven months. A domestic dispute, a stupid argument fueled by too much cheap wine and the ghosts of their past. Liam had been locked up for a weekend, and Maya had paced the floor, the silence deafening. When he’d returned, sheepish and apologetic, they’d held each other so tightly it hurt, whispering promises of a new beginning, of never letting the darkness creep in again.
