The city was a beast, all teeth and concrete, its breath a perpetual hum of sirens and distant traffic. It swallowed them whole, Maya and Liam, two specks of dust adrift in its vast, indifferent maw. Rehab had been a sterile, white purgatory, a forced pause in the dizzying ballet of their lives, but it hadn't purged the hunger. It had merely sharpened it, honed it into a keen, desperate edge.
