Chapter 10
A Path Forward
Heartbroken but resilient, Maya begins the arduous journey of healing. She must find a way to honor Liam's memory while forging a new identity and purpose, learning to love herself and the future.
The silence in the condo was a physical weight, pressing down on Maya until she could barely breathe. Liam. Gone. The word echoed in the cavernous space of her chest, a gaping wound where his laughter, his rough hands, his whispered promises used to reside. Seven months. Seven months of a life they’d clawed their way toward, brick by agonizing brick, drug by drug, jail cell by jail cell. A condo. It wasn’t the usual morning fog of drug haze; this was the chilling clarity of an ending.
Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. She squeezed her eyes shut, willing him to stir, to cough, to shift and pull her closer. But the stillness persisted, a deafening roar in the quiet room. Slowly, with a trembling hand, she reached out, her fingers brushing against his arm. It was cool. Too cool.
