Chapter 6

Chapter 6

Skylia arrives at Hemlock's reinforced cabin and learns the practical realities of living inside iron-lined walls as the shadows test the boundaries after dark. Over the evening, Hemlock shares more about his wife Eleanor, his decades of solitary guardianship, and the personal cost of staying close to the door. Skylia finds a photograph of her mother among Hemlock's belongings, and the two share a moment of genuine connection over their parallel losses. Hemlock teaches Skylia how to feel the shadows with her sensitivity rather than just see them, and she successfully senses a shadow pressing against the cabin's outer wall. The chapter ends when Skylia discovers a fresh handwritten note in Maya's notebook that wasn't there before—a message from Maya on the other side of the door.

"I wasn't planning to."
