Chapter 19
The Seed of What Remains
In the clearing where the bleeding tree once stood, the group catches their breath as the fissure seals itself. Brody and Hemlock assess the damage, Skylia and Maya cling to each other, and Jasper holds the lantern steady. But a shadow bloom emerges from the splinters—a physical remnant of the door. They destroy it together, but from its ashes, a black seed remains. Jasper claims it as the first charge of his guardianship. The group returns to town, changed, as Jasper begins his watch alone.
The lantern's light held steady, clean and white, casting no shadow of its own across the splintered wreckage of the bleeding tree. I stood at the edge of the fissure, watching the stone lip grind against itself, sealing the staircase beneath. The ground was still trembling, small stones skittering down the slope, but the sound of the door closing had already faded into something final.

Hemlock leaned against the trunk of a surviving pine, his good hand pressed to his chest. Sheriff Brody was pacing the edge of the clearing, his boots crunching through the scattered wood, muttering something under his breath that might have been a count or a prayer. The sky above us was the colour of old bone, that grey-blue that comes just before dawn breaks through. The shadows were gone. The air was clear. And yet I could feel it, like a hum just below hearing, a pressure that hadn't fully released.
