Chapter 14

Chapter 14 — The Weight of Coming Back

Maya struggles to reconnect with her body and her memories after crossing back through the membrane, supported by Skylia as the group makes its way to Hemlock's damaged cabin. At the cabin, she observes the others' dynamics—Brody's gruff care, Hemlock's quiet grief, Jasper's watchful ease—and begins to piece together what happened on the other side. When she discovers that memories of Skylia were taken from her by the shadows, the loss becomes concrete and devastating. In a quiet moment alone with Skylia, Maya confronts what the door took and what remains, and the two share an intimate closeness that reorients Maya's sense of self. The chapter ends when Maya notices a mark on her own wrist that pulses in rhythm with Skylia's, confirming Anne Koenig's warning: whoever passes through the membrane carries the door's mark, and the door always knows where they are.

The first thing I notice is gravity.

Not the word—the fact of it. The way it pulls at my bones, settles into my feet, insists I belong to the ground. On the other side of the membrane, gravity was optional. A suggestion. Here, it is a contract, and my body has signed it without reading the fine print.

Skylia's arm is around me. Brody's arm is around me. Between them, I am being walked out of a clearing I barely remember entering, through trees that smell like pine and dirt and the ordinary miracle of being real. My feet move. I'm not sure they're mine. They hit the ground with a certainty my brain can't match, and each step is a negotiation between my legs, which remember walking, and my lungs, which have forgotten how to breathe without counting.
