Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the high, arched windows, illuminating towering shelves packed with ancient tomes. It was a place of quiet contemplation, a sanctuary from the city’s usual cacophony, and precisely the kind of environment that would make an abstract thrive. My gut twisted, a familiar knot of dread tightening with each step. Abstracts weren’t born in the clamor of the streets; they festered in the quiet corners of the human heart, in the places where doubt and fear took root.

Kiko walked beside me, her movements as precise and controlled as the strokes of her brush. She carried herself with an air of detached professionalism, her gaze sweeping over the ornate architecture, noting details I’d long since learned to ignore. Her silence was a heavy blanket, one I’d grown accustomed to since our reluctant pairing. It wasn't hostile, not exactly, but it was a barrier, a carefully constructed wall around her emotions that I, with my own tangled mess of them, found both frustrating and oddly intriguing.

"Anything?" I asked, my voice a low rumble in the cavernous space. My grip tightened on the Great Brush, its familiar weight a small comfort.
