The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick and still, a stale testament to forgotten industry. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the grime-caked windows, illuminating the scene with a spectral glow. My great brush, ‘Inferno,’ felt heavy in my hand, a familiar weight that usually settled my nerves. Tonight, though, it was a leaden anchor, pulling me down into the mire of my own anxieties. Beside me, Kiko was a study in contrasts, her posture as sharp and precise as the lines she drew with her own brush, a sleek, obsidian thing that seemed to drink the light. She was a cipher, a wall of cool efficiency that made my own turbulent emotions feel even more out of place.
We were here because of a whisper, a rumor of an abstract manifesting in the shadows, feeding on the city’s unease. It was the kind of job that usually fell to the junior warriors, but something about this one felt different. The Weaver’s touch, subtle yet undeniable, was in the air, a faint tang of corrupted emotion that prickled at my senses.
“Anything?” I asked, my voice rougher than I intended. The silence that followed was punctuated only by the distant hum of Nervel’s nightlife, a sound that felt miles away from this forgotten corner of the city.
