The chill of the early morning air did nothing to soothe the unease settling in my gut. Nervel, usually a symphony of clattering carts and distant market calls, felt muted, as if holding its breath. The previous night’s abstract attack had left its mark, not just on the cobblestones of the Grand Plaza, but on the city’s collective psyche. I could feel it, a low thrum of anxiety beneath the surface, a fertile ground for the ink monsters to bloom.

Kiko walked beside me, her stride even, her gaze fixed ahead. She was a study in controlled movement, a stark contrast to the volatile energy that often coiled within me. Her presence was a constant reminder of the unspoken tension that had settled between us since our reluctant pairing. We were an odd pair, the fiery, inconsistent Ichi and the cool, precise Kiko, thrown together by circumstance and the looming threat of the Weaver.

“The reports from the plaza are… extensive,” she said finally, her voice level, betraying none of the turmoil I imagined must be churning beneath her composed exterior.
