The air in Nervel felt lighter, almost fragile, like a breath held too long finally exhaled. The oppressive weight that had settled over the city, a palpable gloom born from the Abstract of Fear and the Weaver's insidious influence, had begun to dissipate. It wasn't gone, not entirely, but the sharp edges had softened, the suffocating grip loosened. We had faced the heart of the chaos, the nexus of suppressed anxieties and manipulated despair, and emerged, not unscathed, but victorious.
My great brush, usually heavy with the ghosts of past failures, felt less like a burden and more like an extension of myself. The flame ink, once a wild, untamable beast that threatened to consume me, now pulsed with a controlled warmth, a promise of power I was finally beginning to understand. Patrols were routine, the usual assortment of minor ink manifestations – a stray splash of anger here, a fleeting whisper of melancholy there – easily handled. The grand battles, the city-shaking confrontations, seemed a distant memory, a nightmare receding with the dawn.
