The air in Nervel’s central plaza usually hummed with the gentle murmur of commerce and the distant chime of the city’s clock tower. Today, it was a suffocating blanket of dread. A colossal abstract, a churning vortex of midnight ink and jagged despair, had erupted from the very cobblestones. It was a manifestation of the city’s growing fear, a monstrous entity woven from a thousand anxieties, and it was tearing through the heart of Nervel.

I could feel it, a cold dread coiling in my gut, a familiar sensation that clawed at the edges of my memory. The sheer scale of it was terrifying, dwarfing the ink warriors who scrambled to engage it. Their specialized inks, usually sharp and decisive, seemed to splash uselessly against its amorphous form, each blow swallowed by the churning void. Panic was a tangible thing, a scent in the air, and it was feeding the beast.

“Ichi! We need to move!” Kiko’s voice, usually so measured, was tight with urgency. She stood beside me, her stance coiled and ready, her brush held with unnerving stillness. Even in the face of this overwhelming threat, she radiated a calm that was both admirable and, I admitted grudgingly, a little intimidating. It was a stark contrast to the turmoil churning within me.
