The opulent ballroom of the Lumina Tower shimmered with a thousand points of light, each facet of the crystal chandeliers catching and refracting the gilded opulence of Nervel’s elite. Laughter, sharp and brittle as spun sugar, echoed against the polished marble floors. The air, thick with the cloying scent of expensive perfume and the faint, metallic tang of suppressed anxiety, was a cocktail I knew all too well. Tonight, Kiko and I were just two more faces in the glittering crowd, our ink-stained uniforms exchanged for tailored suits and elegant gowns, our great brushes hidden beneath layers of expensive fabric.

“Stay close,” Kiko murmured, her voice a low current beneath the din of conversation. She adjusted the delicate silver chain around her neck, her eyes, usually so sharp and direct, now held a distant sheen, reflecting the artificial brilliance of the room. She looked every inch the part of a socialite, her movements fluid and practiced, a stark contrast to the coiled tension I felt humming beneath my own skin.

“Wouldn’t dream of it,” I replied, forcing a smile that felt as stiff as my starched collar. We’d spent the last few days poring over the fragmented reports, the hushed whispers of city officials, and the faint, lingering scent of corrupted ink that clung to the edges of these grand gatherings. The Weaver, whoever or whatever it was, was weaving its influence through the very fabric of Nervel’s power structure, and this gala, a celebration of the city’s most influential families, was its latest stage.
