The Art of Trust
During a desperate fight, Ichi instinctively relies on Kiko's calm precision, and she, in turn, anticipates his fiery outbursts. Their ink styles begin to harmonize.
The air crackled, not with the usual hum of Nervel’s bustling heart, but with a palpable tension that coiled in my gut. Before me, the Grand Plaza, usually a vibrant canvas of life, was now a swirling vortex of deepest black. It was the Abstract of Fear, a behemoth of churning dread that dwarfed even the tallest spires of the city. Its form was a grotesque mockery of life, a shapeless mass that pulsed with a thousand terrified screams, each one a tiny, sharp shard of ink tearing at my senses. The local Ink Warriors, usually so confident in their paired formations, were scattered, their ink blasts dissipating against the Abstract’s sheer, suffocating presence. Panic, thick and cloying, began to seep into the very stones beneath my feet.
My own brush felt heavy, leaden. The flame ink within its reservoir seemed to mock me, a volatile power I still struggled to command, a power that had once cost me everything. Beside me, Kiko stood, a stark contrast to the chaos. Her posture was rigid, her movements economical, her expression unreadable behind the cool mask she always wore. Her gravity ink was a steady anchor in the storm, her phase ink a subtle whisper that could shift the very ground beneath an opponent. But even her practiced control seemed strained against this monstrous manifestation of Nervel’s collective terror.
“It’s feeding,” Kiko’s voice was a low, steady current, cutting through the din. “The more we panic, the stronger it gets.”
