The air in the rehearsal space hung thick with the scent of stale sweat and ambition, a familiar perfume to Lyric Blackwell. Tonight, however, it felt more like a suffocating blanket. He ran a hand through his perpetually tousled hair, the stage lights, even the dim ones they used for practice, glinting off the silver rings adorning his fingers. His gaze flickered to the drum kit where Jax was a blur of controlled chaos, Bruno’s bass a steady thrum beneath it all, and Mason’s guitar a molten river of riffs. They were a well-oiled machine, a testament to countless hours spent sweating it out, chasing the ghost of his father’s legendary sound. And for a while, that had been enough. More than enough. It had been everything.

But then Talia had walked into his life, a vibrant splash of color in his monochrome rock-and-roll world. Her music, a sun-drenched fiesta of Latin rhythms and pop sensibilities, had been an unexpected jolt, like a shot of tequila when he’d only ever known whiskey. And Talia herself… well, she was a whole different kind of intoxicating. He found himself replaying their conversations, the way her eyes lit up when she talked about her music, the gentle curve of her smile. It was a dangerous distraction.

“You’re spacing out, man,” Jax grunted, his sticks tapping a restless rhythm on his thighs. “Another solo from your dad’s greatest hits playing in your head?”
