Chapter 14
The Velvet Shadow
Adrian Blackwell attends a rehearsal, expecting failure. He witnesses the raw energy of the new sound, but his pride prevents him from admitting its potential.
The air in the garage rehearsal space, usually thick with the scent of stale beer and teenage ambition, was practically vibrating with a nervous energy that had nothing to do with the impending sonic assault. It was more like the electric hum before a lightning strike, only this lightning was Adrian Blackwell, Lyric’s legendary father, who’d decided, with all the subtlety of a power chord dropped on a baby grand, to grace them with his presence. He stood by the door, arms crossed, a smirk playing on his lips that could curdle milk at fifty paces. His leather jacket, a relic from the Velvet Venom heyday, seemed to absorb the meager light, making him appear more like a gothic monolith than a dad checking in.
Lyric, perched on the edge of a drum stool, felt a bead of sweat trickle down his temple. He’d been expecting this. His father’s disapproval was practically a constant hum in the background of his life, a low-frequency thrum that sometimes threatened to drown out his own melody. But today, it felt louder, more insistent. Adrian had heard about the “new direction,” the whispers of “Latin beats” and “unconventional harmonies,” and had, naturally, decided to investigate the potential disaster firsthand.
“So,” Adrian drawled, his voice a gravelly rumble that had once sold out stadiums, “this is the sound of the future, huh? Sounds more like a mariachi band having a turf war with a garage sale.”
