Scarlett watched Gabby’s small hands meticulously arrange colorful LEGO bricks, a miniature cityscape taking shape on the living room rug. It was a quiet Saturday, a rare reprieve from the usual hum of crime scene tape and urgent phone calls that had once defined her existence. Now, the loudest sound was Gabby’s soft hum of concentration, a melody that had become as familiar and comforting as Ethan’s steady heartbeat against her ear.

“Almost done!” Gabby announced, her voice bright with accomplishment. She held up a tiny, lopsided red car. “This is for you, Scarlett. To drive away all the bad guys.”

Scarlett’s chest tightened, a familiar ache of warmth spreading through her. She knelt beside Gabby, her gaze softening. “It’s perfect, sweetie. The best getaway car I’ve ever seen.” She ruffled Gabby’s dark curls, enjoying the feel of the silken strands beneath her fingers. It was moments like these, so simple and ordinary, that had begun to weave themselves into the very fabric of her being. She had spent so long guarding herself, building walls brick by wall, that the idea of letting someone in, of *belonging*, had felt like an impossible dream. Yet, here she was, surrounded by it.
