The scent of old paper and forgotten memories clung to Daniel Blake like a second skin. It was a scent Scarlett found herself growing accustomed to, a subtle undercurrent to the more immediate aromas of Ethan’s worn leather armchair and the faint, lingering sweetness of Gabby’s strawberry shampoo. Today, however, the scent was stronger, laced with a tension that thickened the air in Ethan’s study. Daniel sat by the window, his gaze fixed on something far beyond the manicured lawn, his knuckles white where he gripped the armrest. Ethan had asked him about his time away, a gentle probe, a father’s hesitant reach across a chasm of years. Daniel’s answers were vague, a tapestry woven with half-truths and carefully omitted details. He spoke of a need to disappear, of a life lived on the fringes, but the ‘why’ remained a ghost, a phantom limb of their shared history.

“It was… complicated, Ethan,” he’d murmured, his voice rough, like stones tumbling in a dry riverbed. “There were things I had to… atone for.”
