The scent of cinnamon and baked apples hung heavy in the air, a comforting, familiar aroma that always signaled the approaching holidays. Scarlett breathed it in, letting the warmth of Kelly’s kitchen seep into her bones. Sunlight, diffused through the lace curtains, painted shifting patterns on the worn oak table where she sat, a half-empty mug of tea growing cool between her hands. Kelly, her flour-dusted apron a testament to her afternoon’s work, hummed softly as she meticulously arranged gingerbread men on a cooling rack.

“They’re almost perfect,” Kelly said, her voice a gentle melody. She held up a gingerbread man with a slightly lopsided smile. “Almost.”

Scarlett chuckled. “They look perfect to me, Kelly. Better than anything I could ever manage.” She thought of her own attempts at baking, usually ending in smoke alarms and calling Ethan for takeout.
