The clatter of the cafe was a familiar symphony to Anya. The hiss of the espresso machine, the murmur of conversations weaving through the air, the gentle scrape of ceramic on saucers – it was her sanctuary, a place where the world’s anxieties seemed to soften at the edges. She nursed a lukewarm latte, her gaze drifting to the rain-streaked window, lost in a swirl of thoughts that had been a constant companion since Liam had entered her life. It had been weeks now, weeks of his quiet presence, his eyes that seemed to see everything, and the subtle, almost imperceptible ways he smoothed the rough edges of her day.

A sudden, sharp sound cut through the ambient noise. Anya flinched, her head snapping up. Across the room, a clumsy waiter, his tray laden with steaming mugs, had stumbled. One mug, precariously balanced, tipped, its dark contents arcing towards the table beside Anya. A woman, engrossed in her phone, was oblivious. Anya’s breath hitched, a silent gasp escaping her lips. It was too close, too fast.

Before the hot liquid could splatter, a blur of motion erupted from a corner booth. Liam. He moved with a speed that belied his usual stillness, a silent predator uncoiling. In a single, fluid motion, he extended his arm, his hand intercepting the falling mug with an impossible grace. The ceramic clinked against his palm, the scalding liquid sloshing but contained within the rim. He righted the tray with his other hand, his expression unreadable, a mask of calm control.
